AI Foundations for Social Work Practice
AI Foundations for Social Work Practice
Artificial intelligence is increasingly present in social work practice through agency tools, documentation systems, screening and assessment tools, client-facing applications, and technologies used to support service delivery. This session introduces the foundations of artificial intelligence and examines how technologies such as predictive analytics, natural language processing, and machine learning are being used across social work settings.
Participants will learn how AI tools function at a practical level, what types of information these systems use, and how AI-generated outputs may influence documentation, assessment, communication, and practice decisions. The session will examine the role of professional knowledge, clinical judgement, and social work values when engaging with AI tools and considering their use in practice.
Participants will leave with a foundational understanding of AI concepts, examples of how AI is being used in social work contexts, and a clearer understanding of questions social workers can ask when encountering AI tools in their practice settings.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Define key artificial intelligence concepts, including predictive analytics, natural language processing, and machine learning, and describe their relevance to social work practice.
- Identify current and emerging uses of artificial intelligence in social work settings, including documentation systems, screening and assessment tools, client-facing applications, and other practice technologies.
- Describe how AI tools use information to generate outputs and identify factors that may affect the accuracy, relevance, and usefulness of those outputs in practice settings.
- Identify considerations for maintaining professional knowledge, clinical judgement, and social work values when engaging with AI tools in practice.
