Ethical Health Care Decision Making: A Social Worker's Ethical Guide to Practice
**Virtual Training**
This presentation equips social workers with the practical and ethical knowledge needed to support clients through health care decision making. It opens with the foundations of advance care planning and introduces participants to the Maryland Health Care Decisions Act. The central focus of the presentation is ethical practice at the end of life utilizing the NASW Standards for Palliative and End-of-Life Care and the Maryland Social Work Code of Ethics (COMAR 10.42.03) for guidance. Lastly, case examples and ethical dilemmas will be explored by participants through interactive discussion.
- Explain the major types of advance directives and define the terminology used in health care decision-making.
- Summarize Maryland’s health care decision-making laws under the Maryland Health Care Decisions Act.
- Describe how an advance directive is completed and the roles of a health care agent and surrogate.
- Apply both the NASW Standards for Palliative and End-of-Life Care and the Maryland Social Work Code of Ethics (COMAR 10.42.03) to practice.
- Analyze ethical dilemmas that arise in health care decision-making.

Jennifer Schermerhorn, LCSW, holds her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work from Salisbury University. She currently serves as the Director of Graduate Field Education and is a clinical associate professor in the School of Social Work at Salisbury University. Her practice background includes over ten years of experience in long-term care as a nursing home social worker. Additionally, Jennifer is a Community Educator volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association, delivering education programs to both the local community and virtually, and a member of the Eastern Shore Area Health Education Board of Directors.
